Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 5,   Pages 729-736 doi: 10.1007/s11783-013-0611-3

Abstract: The conjugates of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) and -SCN-Bz-DTPA-Pb were used as immunogen, whereasthe conjugates of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and -NH -Bn-DTPA-Pb were used as coating antigen.Polyclonal antibodies specific to DTPA-Pb chelates were obtained from rabbits. In the mixing microplate, DTPA and Pb ions formed chelates and combined with specific antibodies. The reaction microplate was coated by the conjugates of BSA and -NH -DTPA-Pb, which competed for the

Engineering 2023, Volume 26, Issue 7,   Pages 54-62 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2022.08.007

Abstract:

The essential role of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in immune system regulation and combatting infectious diseases cannot be fully recognized without an understanding of the changes in its N-glycans attached to the asparagine 297 of the Fc domain that occur under such circumstances. These glycans impact the antibody stability, half-life, secretion, immunogenicity, and effector functions. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed and compared the total IgG glycome—at the level of individual glycan structures and derived glycosylation traits (sialylation, galactosylation, fucosylation, and bisecting N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc))—of 64 patients with influenza, 77 patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and 56 healthy controls. Our study revealed a significant decrease in IgG galactosylation, sialylation, and bisecting GlcNAc (where the latter shows the most significant decrease) in deceased COVID-19 patients, whereas IgG fucosylation was increased. On the other hand, IgG galactosylation remained stable in influenza patients and COVID-19 survivors. IgG glycosylation in influenza patients was more time-dependent: In the first seven days of the disease, sialylation increased and fucosylation and bisecting GlcNAc decreased; in the next 21 days, sialylation decreased and fucosylation increased (while bisecting GlcNAc remained stable). The similarity of IgG glycosylation changes in COVID-19 survivors and influenza patients may be the consequence of an adequate immune response to enveloped viruses, while the observed changes in deceased COVID-19 patients may indicate its deviation.

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2017, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 146-154 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2017136

Abstract: The effect of mulching with straw, white plastic film and black plastic film for improving soil water storage and on the soil properties was examined in a wheat-maize rotation system on Loess soil in northwestern China. All the mulches improved the water storage to some extent and led to warmer soils. However, the organic C and total N contents of the soils declined significantly under the mulches, particularly the plastic film mulches, and this could have long-term detrimental effects on soil quality and the sustainability of the some mulching practices.

Abstract: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is the prototype of the cardiac ion channelopathies, which cause syncope and sudden death. Inherited LQTS is represented by the autosomal dominant Romano-ward syndrome (RWS), which is not accompanied by congenital deafness, and the autosomal recessive Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome (JLNS), which is accompanied by congenital deafness. The LQTS-causing mutations have been reported in patients and families from Europe, North America and Japan. Few genetic studies have been carried out in families with JLNS from China. This study investigates the molecular pathology in four families with LQTS (including a family with JLNS) in the Chinese population. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing were used to screen for , , , and mutation. A missense mutation G314S in an RWS family was identified, and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) G643S was indentified in the of the JLNS family. In this JLNS family, another heterozygous novel mutation in exon 2a was found in of the patients. Our data provide useful information for the identification of polymorphisms and mutations related to LQTS and the Brugada Syndrome (BS) in Chinese populations.

A 3D porous WP2 nanosheets@carbon cloth flexible electrode for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Mingyu Pi, Xiaodeng Wang, Dingke Zhang, Shuxia Wang, Shijian Chen

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 3,   Pages 425-432 doi: 10.1007/s11705-018-1726-7

Abstract:

Self-standing porous WP2 nanosheet arrays on carbon fiber cloth (WP2 NSs/CC) were synthesized and used as a 3D flexible hydrogen evolution electrode. Because of its 3D porous nanoarray structure, the WP2 NSs/CC exhibits a remarkable catalytic activity and a high stability. By using the experimental measurements and first-principle calculations, the underlying reasons for the excellent catalytic activity were further explored. Our work makes the present WP2 NSs as a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution and provides a way to design and fabricate efficient hydrogen evolution electrodes through 3D porous nano-arrays architecture.

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 448-455 doi: 10.1007/s11709-014-0262-x

Abstract: Rock mass classification system is very suitable for various engineering design and stability analysis. classification method is confirmed by Japan Highway Public Corporation that this method can figure out either strength or deformability of rock mass, further appropriating the amount of rock bolts, thickness of shotcrete, and size of pitch of steel ribs just after the blasting procedure. Based on these advantages of method, in this study, according to data of five deep and long tunnels in Iran, two equations for estimating the value of method from and classification systems were developed. These equations as a new method were able to optimize the support system for and classification systems. From classification and its application in these case studies, it is pointed out that the method for the design of support systems in underground working is more reliable than the and classification systems.

The Potential Role of Powdery Mildew-Resistance Gene <i>Pm40i> in Chinese Wheat-Breeding Programs inthe Post-<i>Pm21i> Era Perspective

Shengwen Tang,Yuting Hu,Shengfu Zhong,Peigao Luo

Engineering 2018, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 500-506 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2018.06.004

Abstract:

Powdery mildew, which is caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), is an important leaf disease that affects wheat yield. Powdery mildew-resistance (Pm) gene Pm21 was first transferred into wheat in the 1980s, by translocating the Heuchera villosa chromosome arm 6VS to the wheat chromosome arm 6AL (6VS·6AL). Recently, new Bgt isolates that are virulent to Pm21 have been identified in some wheat fields, indicating that wheat breeders should be aware of the risk of deploying Pm21, although pathological details regarding these virulent isolates still remain to be discovered. Pm40 was identified and mapped on the wheat chromosome arm 7BS from several wheat lines developed from the progenies of a wild cross between wheat and Thinopyrum intermedium. Pm40 offers a broad spectrum of resistance to Bgt, which suggests that it is likely to provide potentially durable resistance. Cytological methods did not detect any large alien chromosomal segment in the wheat lines carrying Pm40. Lines with Pm40 and promising agronomical traits have been released by several wheat-breeding programs in the past several years. Therefore, we believe that Pm40 will play a role in powdery mildew-resistance wheat breeding after Pm21 resistance is overcome by Bgt isolates. In addition, both Pm21 and Pm40 were derived from alien species, suggesting that the resistance genes derived from alien species are potentially more durable or effective than those identified from wheat.
